A Study of Environmental Sanitation of Wells in Seoul Area

Abstract
A study was carried out to investigate the environmental sanitary conditions based on the 102 wells of the areas where muncipal water supply system was not installed in Seoul from October 2 to October 31, 1972.
Especially Coliform group were investigated mainly by the Membrane Filter Method as well as general sanitary conditions, pH value, ammonia nitrogen, hardness and water temperature.
As a result of this study, main findings were as follow:
1. The coliform group were positive at 86 wells out of 102. The positive rate was 84.3% and average of coliform group was 50 in 100 ml water.
2. The average of hardness of well surveyed was 156 p.p.m and five out of 102 were founded over 300 p.p.m.
3. Twenty three open wells surveyed were shown all positive in coliform group test, while 20.3% or 16 out of 79 pumped wells were negative.
4. The positive rate of ammonia nitorgen revealed 11.8% out of 102 wells and that of nitrite nitrogen was 39.2% and 6 wells rate of 5.9% were ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen positive at same time.
5. Coliform group positive rate was 50% in wells within 15m from pollution sources while 86% in those within 3 m.
